A frequently asked Cancer Misdiagnosis question is, "what do 'Misdiagnosis', 'Failure To Diagnose', 'Mistreatment', and 'Delay In Diagnosing' cancer have in common?" The answer is that they are all physically and
financially devastating and can cost a life!
Cancer treatment, generally chemotherapy and / or radiation, is designed to kill living cells. The pain and suffering are enormous; the financial cost is horrendous. Early diagnosis means less pain
and suffering, less financial hardship and a greater chance of survival. We have all heard stories like these:
- A pathologist's misinterpretation
of pap smear test results, leads to a failure to diagnose cervical
cancer which causes the death of a 30-year-old wife and mother.
- A physician negligently fail to notify a 53-year old patient that x-rays showed probable lung cancer. When cancer is finally confirmed, it has metastasized to the brain and other areas.
Cancer treatments are generally "prescribed" by doctors, called oncologists, who specialize in cancer (oncology).
Were you treated unnecessarily due to a misdiagnosis of your condition?
The United States Government has done studies of unnecessary medical treatments, particularly surgical. One congressional subcommittee reported that up to 2.4 million needless operations are performed yearly in the United States
and may lead to 11,900 unnecessary deaths annually.
A study was conducted by Don Harper Mills, MD, JD, of Los Angles, John S. Boyden Jr, MD, of Salt Lake City; and David S. Rubsaman, MD, JD, of Berkeley. It involved a sample of 20,864 hospital charts
randomly selected from 23 representative hospitals in California during a 1-year period. The investigation showed that "disability caused by health-care management" amounted to 140,000 instances for that year in California alone.
The total number of Californians who either died from, or were permanently disabled by their "health-care management," was 19,000 in one year, one study, and only one state!
Again, these stories are almost becoming common:
- A 50- year old husband is incorrectly diagnosed with cancer and dies from a reaction to an anticancer drug and the chemotherapy.
- A 23- year old woman is misdiagnosed with uterine cancer and under goes a hysterectomy.
No one claims that diagnosis is easy, but additional pain, financial loss and medical treatments plus the fear of death are the common results of a misdiagnosis. When a misdiagnosis is due to
medical negligence or medical malpractice, there is legal recourse.
